Essential Characteristics

The flame resistance of Omega FR™ is an essential characteristic that is inherent or built into the fibre. Thus, the actual chemical structure of the fibre is not flammable. Unlike natural fibres and most synthetic fibres, Omega™ FR does not ignite and burn in air nor does Omega FR™ melt and drip. Garments of Omega FR™ act as a protective barrier and help reduce burn injury.

The high temperature integrity of Omega FR™ results from a unique mechanism in the fibre. When exposed to intense heat, the Omega FR™ fibre carbonises and becomes thicker, forming a protective barrier between the heat source and the skin. This protective barrier stays subtle and flexible until it cools, giving the wearer extra seconds of protection for escape.

Omega FR™ fibre helps to reduce burn injury in three ways:


Of all the factors that determine physical comfort, the most basic is thermal comfort, or the body's ability to manage heat. The balance between creating and losing body heat helps determine how cool an individual feels. Evaporation and convection are the body's two most important cooling methods and major contributors to comfort. For cooling to occur, heat generated by activity must be lost or dissipated through the skin and clothing.

Convection transfers heat away from the body into the cooler atmosphere when air moves across our skin or through our garment. Air movement, ventilation and wind all increase the amount of heat loss through convection. Evaporation is the body's most efficient method of heat loss. When the air is hotter than we are, it cannot take heat from us through convection, so we perspire. When our perspiration evaporates, heat is taken from our skin and our body temperature is lowered.

Only breathable fabrics can take advantage of these types of heat loss. Fabrics that do not breathe adequately cause perspiration to build up inside the garment, while fabrics which absorb moisture, such as Cotton, quickly become saturated. A garment saturated with moisture clings to the skin creating a damp, uncomfortable feeling.

Breathable Omega FR™ rainwear is designed to collect and transfer perspiration out of the garment as well as allowing a measured amount of heat loss. This leaves the worker dry from both the transferred perspiration and the rain. 

Electric Arc and Intense Heat

Fire fighters have a heavy load to bear - their turnout gear shouldn't add to it. So DuPont™ fibres help fabric manufacturers create fire resistant outer shells, moisture barriers and liners that not only stand up to the thermal hazards they may face, but also help them get the job done without getting in the way of mobility.

DuPont™ does this with science-based innovations such as Nomex® and Kevlar® brand fibres and constantly research unique ways they can be used to help improve protection. Unlike other materials and fibres available, gear and accessories made with Nomex® fibre are inherently flame resistant and won't melt, drip or support combustion in the air. And the thermal protection offered by Nomex® is permanent - its superior flame resistance cannot be washed out or worn away. Kevlar® helps fabric manufacturers enhance the overall durability and strength of lightweight turnout gear outer-shell and thermal liner systems. It is five times stronger than steel on an equal weight basis, yet is lightweight, comfortable and thermally protective.

Both these innovative fibres are found in each layer of most turnout gear for ultimate protection. 

Omega FR™ is a total turnout type system for fire fighters and also Gas and Electric Utility transmission and distribution workers who are exposed to similar thermal hazards. System components include an outer shell, a moisture barrier and a thermal liner. The system provides premium protection against electric arc, flash fire and intense heat, giving PPC that is tough and durable, yet comfortable and breathable to help guard against fatigue and heat stress. It all adds up to giving workers the flexibility to work a vehicle accident, ventilate a roof or drag a hose line and the protection to fight a 3-alarm blaze.

Workers working in areas where there are electric hazards should be provided with the right types of electric arc garments meeting the risk protection categories identified in those work areas. Electric arc garments made of Omega FR™ fabrics, to the electric arc categories, will be an excellent investment. NFPA 70E standards should be a reference in this instance.

The Outer Shell

DuPont™ Z-200™ proprietary aramid fibre is used to stand up to heat, stay strong and protect the inner components. Kevlar® filament is engineered into the fabric to help reduce fabric profile while strengthening the shell's level of performance. Durable DuPont™ Teflon® HT water repellent treatments help keep the system lighter and prevent water from compromising valuable air layers that provide the bulk of the garment's thermal insulation. 

The Moisture Barrier

Fabrics such as Nomex® fibre and Nomex® E89™ nonwovens enable the most trusted and reliable moisture barriers to be manufactured. They provide strong flame resistant substrates for a liquid impermeable film. The moisture barrier helps protect against the intrusion of water, chemicals and viral agents. These barriers are also breathable, which allows metabolic heat to escape and helps reduce the overall heat stress during strenuous activities.

The Thermal Liner

Nomex® and Kevlar® fibre batts and Nomex® E89™ nonwovens are usually combined with face cloths made with Nomex® and Kevlar® to help provide durable, flexible heat insulating components. Thermal liners made with multi-layer Nomex® E89™ nonwovens are among the thinnest, most flexible, most breathable components on the market. Face cloths using Kevlar® filament yarns help reduce surface friction, improving overall garment mobility. Water-wicking or repellent finishes on individual layers improve moisture management and reduce garment drying time.

Flash Fire

In a flash fire, a matter of seconds can mean the difference between minor burns and life-threatening injuries. By far the greatest factor affecting survivability is the percentage of the body that receives second and third-degree burns. The lower the level of total body burn, the greater the chance of survival.

Flame resistant garments of Omega FR™ help protect the wearer from the heat and flame of a flash fire, providing valuable seconds for escape and minimising the potential for burn injury. The thermal protective properties of fabrics and fabric systems can be demonstrated through the use of the Thermal Protective Performance (TPP) Test, as described in NFPA Standard 1971 and ASTM D4108. The Thermal Protective Performance Test measures how well a fabric or fabric system can protect the wearer against second-degree burns in a flash fire. The higher the TPP value, the more thermal protection the fabric provides relative to other fabrics.

High Visibility

In foul weather and low light conditions, work zones that put workers in close proximity to oncoming traffic create a tremendous work hazard. To protect the worker, you must maximise a driver’s reaction time. The worker needs to be visible to the oncoming traffic even when the job at hand diverts the worker’s attention away from the oncoming traffic. High visibility work wear is necessary to create contrast between the worker and the work zone.

The ANSI 107 standard establishes a set of performance criteria for high visibility apparel. The standard defines garment categories that are based on worker hazards and tasks, complexity of the work environment or background and vehicular traffic and speed.

Omega FR™ garments in Fluorescent Lime Yellow or Fluorescent Orange provide excellent worker day/night high visibility and both fabric systems comply with ANSI 107 Class 3 Level 2.

Dupont Performance Coatings

DuPont’s Nomex® wants you to feel that your clothing is there for you when you need it, so you can perform to your fullest potential when facing intense heat and flames. Nomex® thermal technology has a 40-year history demonstrating proven protection against electric arc flash and flash fire. Inherently flame resistant Nomex® is valued by military personnel, those employed by the chemical and petrochemical industries, electrical utility workers and firefighters because it protects them from thermal hazards associated with electric arc flash and flash fire. Nomex® is also worn by F1®, NASCAR® and MotoGP™ drivers, riders and pit crew who, for decades, have relied on racing apparel made with DuPont™ Nomex® brand fibre to help keep them safe from harm. Only one brand provides this level of protection and that brand is Nomex®.   

3M Scotchlite

3M™ Scotchlite™ reflective material makes people visible – it reflects light back to its source such as vehicle headlights, making the garment wearer visible to the motorist more easily and earlier. As a result, motorists have more time to react.  

Omega FR™ Care Instructions

Omega FR™ Extended Care – hang garment after each use and keep clean for optimum performance. For maximum performance it is recommended that Omega FR™ be laundered after exposure to any liquid other than water.

End User Intended Use

Omega FR™ meets the requirements of ASTM F1891 “Standard Specification for Arc and Flame Resistant Rainwear” and ASTM F2723 “Standard Specification for Flame Resistant Rainwear for Protection Against Flame Hazards”. End users must use this product ONLY for protection against inclement weather, electric arc exposures and flash fire exposures.
