Projob Work Wear - FR High Visibility Jacket and Trouser Technical
This section discusses the FR properties of the fibres used in the construction of our Projob High Visibility Jacket and Trouser range, noting:
- Projob FR High Visibility Jackets are constructed using a blend of Protex® Modacrylic (54%), Cotton (44%) and Anti-static Control fibre (2%).
- Projob FR High Visibility Trousers are constructed using a blend of Protex® Modacrylic (54%), Cotton (44%) and Anti-static Control fibre (2%).
Flame resistance has a direct correlation to the Limiting Oxygen Index of the fibre(s) used in a textile's composition. The Limiting Oxygen Index is a measurement, expressed as a percentage, of the minimum concentration of oxygen needed in air to support combustion of the fibre. Since atmospheric air contains an oxygen concentration of 20.95%, fibres with a greater value Limiting Oxygen Index can be considered non-flammable or flame resistant, although it is acknowledged that a Limiting Oxygen Index ≥ 26 provides for the safest level of protection. The Limiting Oxygen Index of 100% Protex® Modacrylic is approximately 32 and since the fibre does not ignite in air, burn, melt or form molten droplets, human skin is much safer when next to the fibre.

Kanecaron/Protex is the registered brand name for modacrylic fibres produced by Kaneka Corporation. Protex® Modacrylic is the advanced FR fibre in the Kanecaron* family. Based on the original characteristic of Kanecaron, both FR and heat resistance is improved which allows blends with other FR fibres, such as Cotton or Wool, while retaining an exceptionally high level of FR performance. Protex® Modacrylic is one of the most popular fibres used for PPC in Europe and can be found in petrochemical, refining, electric utilities, welding, molten iron and steel splash and other high risk hazard industries where heat and flame hazards are ever present.
*Kanecaron is a performance fibre that has the characteristics of high flame retardancy in addition to the soft hand and dye ability, as is the nature of acrylic^ fibre. It is an inherently self-extinguishing FR fibre that imparts excellent flame retardant properties to fabrics and nonwovens in blends with other natural and synthetic fibres. There is no deterioration in flame retardancy after either repeated washing or normal use over time.
^Acrylic fibres are a synthetic fibre made from a polymer, polyacrylonitrile, with an average molecular weight of ~100,000, about 1900 monomer units. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is a synthetic resin prepared by the polymerisation of acrylonitrile. A member of the important family of acrylic resins, it is a hard, rigid thermoplastic material that is resistant to most solvents and chemicals, slow to burn and of low permeability to gases. Most polyacrylonitrile is produced as acrylic and modacrylic fibre, a common substitute for Wool in clothing and home furnishings. To be called acrylic, the polymer must contain at least 85% acrylonitrile monomer. Protex® Modacrylic is a modified acrylic with permanent flame retardant qualities.
How Modacrylic Protex® Protects
Inherently flame retardant - Protex® Modacrylic is an inherently flame retardant fabric in which the fibre resin itself contains the flame retardant ingredient. When the flame source is removed, Protex® Modacrylic has a self-extinguishing nature which causes combustion to immediately cease. Unlike FR after treatments, there is no deterioration in flame retardancy after either repeated washing or normal use over time. Protex® Modacrylic blended fabric will self-extinguish and a char barrier will form that works as a shield to minimise fire damage.
Limiting Oxygen Index – Protex® Modacrylic fibre exhibits an exceptionally high Limiting Oxygen Index of approximately 32 in comparison to some other FR fibres. When Protex® Modacrylic is used in a blend with Cotton (cellulosic or other fibres), a positive synergistic effect takes place. When used in recommended proportions the combination of the two fibres increases the overall Limiting Oxygen Index to 35, which is a very high FR performance level. Put simply, the FR performance is improved giving an additional safety margin.
No melting or dripping (char forming) - Protex® Modacrylic creates excellent charring characteristics without melting or dripping when exposed to flame and high temperature. The char forming barrier works to prevent the flame spread and stop the burn when the flame source is removed. As there is no melting or dripping, it ensures that no potentially dangerous molten droplets are produced, which might stick to the skin, causing severe burns such as those which could occur with polyester or other thermoplastic fibres. Protex® Modacrylic helps to reduce the risk of molten droplets when blended with thermoplastic fibres. The degree to which Protex® Modacrylic can help reduce the risk of molten droplets will depend on the blend ratio of Protex® Modacrylic used.
Comfort – because Protex® Modacrylic is blended with Cotton and similar fibres, the end fabric can provide a level of comfort, softness, air circulation and moisture management not normally associated with some other FR protective work wear fabrics.
Look – Protex® Modacrylic also provides great design and colour possibilities. Cationic dyeing allows for a wide range of bright and strong shades to be achieved, unlike some other fibres. Apart from its FR qualities, Protex® Modacrylic is impossible to distinguish between non FR garments by look alone.
The perfect blend partner - the superior properties of Protex® Modacrylic allows for blends with other fibres, such as Cotton, Wool, Rayon and Anti-static in various combinations or with intimate blended fabric to achieve a high level of FR performance. In blends with other fibres, Protex® Modacrylic works as the FR blend partner to achieve a high level of FR performance in yarn and fabric. Especially, Protex® Modacrylic blended with cellulosic fibres, such as Cotton or Rayon, increases the FR performance overall. Easy processing – Protex® Modacrylic can be blended with other fibres for intimate blends or in various fabric combinations. It can also be dyed with by cationic dyestuffs, resulting in a long lasting colour shade. Similar processing conditions, as with regular acrylic fibre, can be applied to each phase of spinning, dyeing and forming. Through normal processing, woven, nonwoven, felted or knitted fabrics can be moulded with a deep shape without sacrificing the hand of the fibre.
Chemical resistance – Protex® Modacrylic exhibits superior chemical resistance against acid, alkaline, organic and inorganic chemicals and is used commonly in industrial materials.
Soft to the touch – Protex® Modacrylic has a unique cross-sectional shape that imparts a soft hand. It is good for interior uses that require a natural appearance and comfortable feel. The wearing experience is also most favourable, as it has a very nice feel when blended with natural fibres, such as Cotton.
Cotton (as a blend Partner) – Cotton is a soft and comfortable natural material. It insulates and ventilates. One of Cotton’s advantages is that it does not melt when exposed to flames and sparks and that it is difficult to ignite. Projob Work Wear’s heavy-duty cotton twill is extra sturdy and durable. This is possible because Projob Work Wear AB of Sweden is involved in the direct development from fibre to final production.

Electrostatic Discharge (ESD and the use of Anti-static Control Fibre)
The unintended consequences of static discharge can cause serious problems in a number of environments. Explosions in grain storage facilities often are cited as one of the most graphic examples. However, static discharge also can damage products in electronic assembly; prevent production machinery from operating properly and create a number of quality, health and safety concerns in the work environment. Refineries, medical operating rooms, pharmaceutical manufacturers, paint spraying and powder coating operations, electronics manufacturers, clean rooms and military operations are just some of the places where static-control textiles have served market demand.
In the automotive industry, product applications include seatbelts and upholstery. Bulk bags, anti-static brushes and conveyors and paper-forming belts make manufacturing safer and more efficient. Anti-static brushes inside printers are widely used hidden components. The commercial environment has benefited from using anti-static engineered commercial upholstery and flooring products and the list goes on.
There are a number of solutions to creating fabric formations that control static discharge. Aside from anti-static finishes, various inherent fibre and yarn configurations offering conductive characteristics may also provide benefits in knits, wovens and nonwovens. By incorporating conductive materials into the constructions, the fabrics safely collect and dissipate the static charge. Traditionally, man-made fibres have been combined with conductive materials to provide the necessary dissipation. These fibres are then incorporated into the fabric construction - in some cases woven in a simple check or stripe to produce ample conductivity. In other cases, as little as 1 to 2% inclusion of conductive fibre can provide enough dissipation to meet the market specification. For example, Dupont™ Nomex® IIIA, one of the world’s leading and most recognised FR fabric, contains no more than 2% anti-static dissipative (P-140) fibre.
Conductive materials typically include either silver or carbon. They are doped, coated or extruded in varying cross sections to achieve the level of conductivity in a polymer that meets end use requirements.
Anti-static applications continue to grow even though the battle to control Electrostatic Discharge is not new. Applications including nonwoven constructions used for dry filtration and conductive papers and even the consumer demands for technical-oriented apparel could present opportunities. Knit, woven and nonwoven fabric constructions offer opportunities to combine varying fabric performance and cost levels with the added value of anti-static performance.
