NSA Primary Aluminised OPF Protective Apparel

Primary PPE serves as the first line of defence during hazardous activities such as charging, tapping and pouring in smelters, foundries and steel mills. It is explicitly engineered to be worn over secondary protective clothing to prevent severe burn injuries from massive thermal energy and direct contact with molten aluminium, iron or steel.

National Safety Apparel (NSA) specialised Primary OPF Protective Apparel features aluminised technology designed to shed molten metal splash and reflect radiant heat. In high-heat industrial environments such as foundries and smelting operations, NSA's Primary Aluminised Protective Outerwear garments are specifically designed to withstand significant, direct exposure to molten metal substances, sparks and flame.

NSA's innovative designs offer lightweight comfort without compromising safety. NSA PPE is engineered to shield workers not only from molten metal and radiant heat but also contact heat and cut, puncture and abrasion risks - preventing injuries and reducing heat stress in high-risk environments.

NSA Thermal 11oz/373gsm Aluminised OPF Ripstop Blend Solutions

OPF (Oxidised Polyacrylonitrile) aluminised materials are high-performance thermal fabrics designed for smelters, foundries, welding and metal processing. By combining a heat-reflecting aluminium surface with an inherently fire resistant core, these materials shed molten metal and shield workers from radiant heat up to 1093°C (2000°F). The inherent fireproof properties of the OPF base fabric block direct flames.

The Outer Layer (Aluminium Foil/Coating) acts as a thermal mirror. It is highly effective at deflecting intense radiant heat and prevents hot fluid, sparks and molten metal splashes from sticking to the fabric. Instead, molten metal drops bead up and roll off smoothly.

The Base Cloth (OPF) fibres, are thermally stabilised in a high-temperature oven with air. This oxidation process alters the molecular structure into a stable "ladder" configuration that ensures the fibre cannot burn, melt, soften, or drip even under direct flame exposure.

OPF Core Properties and Benefits

Extreme Thermal Defence: The base material features a remarkably high Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of up to 45% to 55% making it completely self-extinguishing and non-combustible in normal atmospheric conditions.

Heat Reflection: The aluminised exterior reflects up to 95% of radiant heat, helping reduce worker heat stress.

Metal Shedding: The smooth aluminium layer prevents molten aluminium, iron and steel from sticking to or burning through the fabric.

No After-Burn: OPF fibres are inherently flame resistant. They will not ignite, melt or continue to burn when removed from the heat source.

Flexibility: Unlike heavy, rigid carbon blends, OPF textiles remain relatively soft and flexible, allowing for better wearer mobility.

Dimensional Stability: OPF retains its physical structure and will not shrink, break open or crack when subjected to extreme heat or thermal shock.

Carbon Armour™ Aluminised OPF Ripstop Product Care

  • Read the garment label and launder per the instructions on the garment label,
  • DO NOT dry clean or machine wash. DO NOT store garments wet or with any chemical contamination. DO NOT clean with any compounds containing ammonia chlorine or other oxidising or abrasive agents.
  • Gently wipe clean with a soft cloth and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly. Dry garments by hanging in well vented, shaded areas.
  • The outer shell of these aluminised garments contain a highly reflective surface and it is extremely important that this surface is clean so that it can perform at peak efficiency.
  • Wash according to the instructions above to remove any contaminants in order to maintain fabric performance when the garment becomes soiled with dirt, grease and oils.
