The smelting and refining industry has a larger rate of injuries than most other industries with injuries commonly the result of molten metal splash and spillage. In addition, heat stress illnesses such as heat stroke are also common, primarily due to infrared radiation from furnaces and molten metal. This is especially a problem when strenuous work must be performed in extremely hot environments.
The AUSTRALIAN manufactured specialist FR RATED INDUSTRIAL SOCK is a unique, comfortable, three layer constructed garment. The garment was engineered to provide an additional layer of protection for employees working in primary aluminium smelters where molten metal can enter safety footwear or penetrate protective workwear. The garment is however multi-purpose and suitable for any environment where there is risk of injury from electric arc, flash fire, extreme heat and ignition.
The garment's ability to protect the wearer against injury lies in a unique knitting process. Tightly knitted layers assist in diffusing flame immediately, allowing the garment to resist extreme heat and molten metal to temperatures of 1400⁰C. In such extreme conditions, the garment will not melt and affix itself to the wearer's body.
The Natural Properties of Merino Wool
Wool is one of the oldest known natural fibres and is constantly in demand for its unique natural properties including comfort and inherent fire resistance, properties that science cannot yet replicate. The ability of Wool to absorb 30 percent of its weight in moisture vapour gives it superior comfort, insulation, anti-static properties and flame resistance. While Wool can absorb moisture, it also repels liquids. Wool has a natural elasticity greater than any other natural fibre, which makes it comfortable to wear as it fits the shape of the body.
