Stormy FR and Anti-Static Life Vest Systems

Life vest systems in the offshore oil and gas industry are critical personal protective equipment designed for high-risk offshore marine environments, requiring compliance with SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) standards. Australian designed Stormy inflatable Fire Resistant and Fire Retardant/Anti-Static life vest systems range from 200N to 300N buoyancy to ensure survival in rough, cold or remote waters.

Offshore SOLAS life vest systems are the standard for commercial offshore operations. These high-buoyancy devices are designed to turn an unconscious worker face-up in rough seas, even when wearing heavy work PPE or a tool belt.  The Fire Resistant and Fire Retardant/Anti-Static capabilities are essential for workers performing high-risk tasks on platforms. The specialised FR materials used in Stormy life vest systems, Nomex® and EmphaSTAT, are designed to withstand flash fire, sparks, molten metal and extreme heat.

APPLICATION: Offshore Oil and Gas Extraction, Offshore FLNG Processing and Extreme High-Risk Marine Environments.

While working on deck - Performing tasks where there is risk of flash fire, flame and falling into the sea.

Helicopter transfers - During flights to and from rigs.

Emergency situations - In case of fire, abandonment or man-overboard incidents.

Quick Facts

Newton Buoyancy (a Newton represents the amount of force required to accelerate a 1 kilogram mass at a rate of 1 metre per second squared).

  • 50 Newtons - Intended for use by persons who are competent swimmers.
  • 100 Newtons - Intended for use by persons who may need to wait for rescue but will do so in a safe position in sheltered waters.
  • 150 Newtons - General offshore and rough weather use. It will turn an unconscious person into a safe position.
  • 275 Newtons - For use offshore by persons dressed in heavy PPE and carrying tools.

SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) - The SOLAS convention is the most critical international maritime treaty, setting minimum safety standards for the construction, equipment and operation of merchant ships to ensure safety. Managed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), it mandates the compliance for international voyages, covering areas like structural integrity, fire protection and lifesaving appliances.

ISO 12402-2:2020 specifies the safety requirements for high-performance (275Nweton) lifejackets designed for offshore, extreme conditions or when wearing heavy protective clothing or additional loads are being carried. The 2020 revision updates the 2006 standard, focusing on performance, strength and material requirements to ensure reliable, face-up in-water support.

ISO 12402-3:2020 specifies the safety and performance requirements for 150N level lifejackets intended for adults, children and infants. These personal flotation devices (PFDs) are designed for offshore or rough water use, providing, at minimum, 150 Newtons of buoyancy to support users with heavy clothing, even if unconscious.

  • Fire resistant slimline and lightweight design to fit comfortably and easily over PPE.
  • A utility pocket on the chest is designed to stow safety extras.
  • Reflective material over the shoulders enhances Hi Vis safety.
  • The 300N version is recommended for weights over 120kg - recommended for workers wearing a tool belt or heavy PPE.
  • The vest can be adapted to be compatible with an industrial full body harness.
  • The vest can be fitted with an ISO accredited deck harness.
  • The inflation device is a 60 gram CO2 cylinder, which provides 300N of buoyancy.
  • The durable DuPont® Nomex® fabric offers arc flash and flash fire resistance. At temperatures above approximately 427°C (800°F), Nomex® will simply form a very tough carbonaceous char, which is the essence of its fire protective mode of action. Nomex® fabric exceeds the Australian Wildland Standard AS/NZS 4824 with demonstrated usage by the Australian Fire Service.
  • Options - the vest can be customised to include an internal fitting for a personal locator beacon device, name or corporate logo or SOLAS accredited water activated light.
  • Purchase and Service - In conjunction with the manufacturer, we record your purchase date, email you service reminders and maintain your company records until retirement of the vest.
